Grades 6–12

In-person Public Speaking Program

In-person, Public Speaking Program

Grades 6 to 12.

Description: The Course will focus on key aspects of public speaking. Each week will allow students to participate and learn in a variety of ways: a brief lecture delivered by the coach, past videos and performances to analyze effective technique, speaking activities, class presentations, and a short homework assignment to help maintain new skills and practice research/writing outside of class time. Each lesson will focus on a specific aspect of public speaking, including inflection, body language, memorization, and audience engagement. By the end of the 12 weeks, students will be able to deliver a pre-written speech from memory (using scripts from past famous speeches provided by the Discourse Power coaching team), utilizing what they have learned and building emotional, powerful delivery. Students will participate in other impromptu speaking activities each week to gradually build confidence. Their confidence and presentation skills will be a benefit throughout future endeavors, including but not limited to education, careers, and extracurricular activities. This program will be coached by an exceptional candidate who was named National Champion in Extemporaneous Speaking 2025 at the National Individual Events Tournament of Champions (NIETOC). The coach will join the in-person class through Zoom session live at the class time, and the Assistant Speech Coach at the Mountain House class location will support. A minimum of seven students' enrollment, and a maximum of 12 students in class. No class during the spring break. 12-week program. 1.5 Hours each week. Extra practice through Zoom sesisons.  No class during the Spring Break. Instructional  (18 hours) + Extra Practice (6 hours) = 24 hours in a semester
